Increased Uptime

ECO-W is water-washable which streamlined the production and cleaning processes.

Problem:

A leading dental manufacturer sought a safer, easier to clean, water-based mold release to replace their existing silicone spray. The incumbent product caused significant buildup, resulting in frequent maintenance downtime and relied on high-VOC formulations and solvents for cleaning.

With complex composite molds used to produce a range of thermoformed plastic components, the company required a solution that would improve efficiency while meeting environmental and safety goals. Miller-Stephenson leveraged it’s technical expertise to transition the operation from a solvent-based aerosol to a high-performance, water-based liquid release system, reducing VOC exposure, simplifying cleanup and minimizing downtime.

Solution:

Leveraging Miller-Stephenson’s proprietary cross-linking and thin-film technology, ReleaSys ECO-W was selected as the optimal solution. Following rigorous evaluation and side by side testing against multiple competitive release agents, ReleaSys ECO-W consistently delivered superior performance as a high durability, semi-permanent release system.

The water-based, water washable formulation enabled the customer to eliminate VOCs entirely, remove time-consuming solvent cleaning steps and transition to an automated robotic spraying process. A simple water rinse cleanup streamlined maintenance, reduced labor requirements and significantly improved production uptime.

Equally important, while ReleaSys ECO-W does not carry formal biocompatibility certifications, it successfully passed independent third-party toxicology testing, confirming it’s suitability and safety for this sensitive dental manufacturing application.

Result:

Built on next-generation chemistry, ReleaSys ECO-W delivered more consistent, predictable release performance while significantly improving overall production efficiency. When paired with a low-pressure robotic spray system, the water-based, water-soluble formulation reduced scrap rates, minimized downtime and lowered operating costs across the process.

Eliminating VOCs from both the product and the maintenance routine created a cleaner, safer and more worker-friendly manufacturing environment. With reduced release agent usage per part and a simple water-rinse cleaning process, maintenance became faster and virtually effortless, further increasing uptime and throughput.

ReleaSys ECO-W successfully passed independent third-party toxicology testing, additional certifications were not required, accelerating implementation and avoiding unnecessary costs. Transitioning from aerosols to a bulk liquid system also eliminated aerosolization expenses and reduced shipping costs by reclassifying the product as non-hazardous. Altogether, the solution delivered more than a 50% reduction in price per fluid ounce while improving overall performance.

Results at a Glance:

  • Increased uptime through faster, simpler cleaning

  • Improved worker safety with a water-based, VOC-free process

  • Reduced scrap rates and higher-quality parts

  • Lower total costs with bulk liquid supply and reduced usage

  • 50% reduction in price per fluid ounce
